American Music Store is the next generation of American Music Exchange, founded by Bud Whitcomb in 1988. Known as AMX Music, it became an iconic part of the Encinitas community in California.
Our history
A story 38+ years in the making.
In January 2022, Khrys Maxwell officially launched American Music Store following Bud’s retirement in December 2021. Khrys was one of Bud’s first customers, started working for him in 1991, and was teaching guitar here by 1992.
As lifelong residents of Encinitas and graduates of San Dieguito, we are dedicated to nurturing and expanding the local art and music scene for our students and professional customers alike.
Khrys joins the store
Khrys Maxwell, one of Bud’s first customers, starts working at AMX Music.
Khrys starts teaching
Khrys begins teaching guitar at the store, a role that continues to this day.
Bud retires
After more than three decades, Bud retires in December 2021, passing the torch to Khrys.
American Music Store launches
Khrys officially launches American Music Store in January 2022, carrying the legacy forward.
