My name is Rod Contreras. With over 25 years of teaching experience in the heart of Encinitas, I bring a fresh and personalized approach to every lesson. By focusing on your unique interests, we explore how the hidden architecture of music has shaped everyone from Bach to the Beatles and beyond.
How do rhythm, note-reading, harmony, and music technology create a more dynamic process that inspires us to dive deeper into the language of music? You’ll play on a stunning Boston acoustic piano and explore other modalities, including synthesizers, drum machines, and loopers. Not to mention you’ll get to record live and get instant feedback on what you play.
Once the fundamentals are established, we’ll dive into original arrangements – and perhaps even your own compositions! My goal is to help each student tap into their unique learning blueprint, allowing for a deeper connection with creativity, rooted in the profound intelligence of our musical bodies and minds.

In order to help students in their practice between lessons, students receive personalized emailed recordings of the songs they are working on. Fun music apps are also used to accelerate the learning process.

Simple, straightforward pricing.
Lessons start at $45 per half hour and vary by teacher. Payment is collected monthly to reserve your weekly time slot.
Our teachers are professional musicians — this is how they earn a living. We appreciate you paying on time.

- Payment for the full month is due before the first of each month to reserve your weekly time slot.
- If a scheduled lesson is missed, a makeup must be scheduled within 30 days of payment.
- If a makeup is offered but the student cannot attend, it is considered forfeited.
- Teachers will work with you on makeups for vacations or illness.
- All teachers can use Zoom for online lessons when in-person does not work.
- Individual teachers may have their own policies and flexibility.
